Hair porosity quiz results: how common is each type?

Every time someone finishes our quiz, we count the result: low, medium or high porosity. Nothing else. Here is what the first 138 completed quizzes show, how we counted them, and what the numbers can and cannot tell you.

The results

Between 23 July and 19 October 2026, 138 people completed the hair porosity quiz on this site. This is how their results split:

What stands out

Medium porosity is the most common result by far. Close to two in three people land in the middle: a cuticle that is neither tightly sealed nor worn open. If you got a medium result, you are in good company, and the medium porosity guide covers how to keep it there.

High porosity came out slightly ahead of low. One in five results was high, against about one in six for low. With this many quizzes the gap is small enough to be chance, but it points the way you would expect: your starting porosity comes from the natural structure of your hair, while color, bleach and heat can only push it toward more porous over time. Our guide to whether hair porosity can change explains why.

Low porosity is less common, not rare. About 1 in 6 people got a low result. If that is you, the low porosity guide explains why products seem to sit on top of your hair and what to do about it.

United States vs everywhere else

Just under half of the quizzes (62) came from the United States. The rest came from more than 25 other countries, led by the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and Germany. None of those has enough results on its own to say anything useful, so they are grouped together here.

WhereMediumHighLowQuizzes
United States56%26%18%62
Everywhere else68%16%16%76

Quiz takers in the United States got a high porosity result more often, about one in four. These are small groups, so treat the difference as something to watch as more results come in rather than a finding.

How we counted

The quiz asks eight questions about how your hair takes in water, how long it takes to dry, how products behave, how a strand feels, and your history with color and heat. Each answer leans low, medium or high, and your result comes from the average of your answers.

  • Only the final result is counted. Your individual answers never leave your browser. We record one anonymous event when a quiz is finished, saying low, medium or high, plus the rough country the visit came from.
  • No personal details. There is no name, email or account involved, so a result cannot be traced back to anyone.
  • Each visitor counts once per day. Retaking the quiz on the same day counts once; a retake on a later day counts again.
  • Automated traffic is removed. Visits our analytics flags as bots are left out.
  • The date range is fixed. These figures cover 23 July to 19 October 2026.

Reading the numbers carefully

These are honest numbers, but they come with limits worth knowing before you quote them.

  • It is a quiz, not a lab test. Porosity can be measured precisely in a laboratory. Our quiz estimates it from what you notice about your own hair, which is useful but less exact.
  • Mixed answers land in the middle. Because the result is an average, someone whose answers point in different directions will often get medium. Part of the medium share is people with mixed signals, including hair that behaves differently at the roots and the ends.
  • The people taking it are not everyone. People usually look for a porosity quiz when their products are not working, so these results describe people trying to solve a hair problem, not the whole population.
  • 138 is a modest number. It is enough to show that medium dominates, but not enough to rank high against low with confidence, or to compare countries.

Common questions

What is the most common hair porosity?

In our quiz results, medium porosity is the most common result by a wide margin: 63% of 138 completed quizzes. High porosity came second at 20% and low porosity third at 17%.

Is low porosity hair rare?

It is less common than medium in our results, but not rare: about 1 in 6 people who took the quiz got a low porosity result.

Are my quiz answers stored?

No. Your individual answers stay in your browser. When you finish, only the final result (low, medium or high) is counted, anonymously, with no name, email or account attached.

Can I use these numbers?
